-
What is the SAP 2027 deadline and why does it matter?
The SAP 2027 deadline refers to the end of mainstream maintenance for SAP ECC (ERP Central Component) and related Business Suite applications. After 2027, SAP will only offer extended maintenance at premium pricing, with no new features or enhancements. This means companies still running ECC need to migrate to S/4HANA to maintain full support, access new innovations, and avoid escalating maintenance costs. Starting migration planning now is critical, as complex transformations can take up to 36 months.

EU Regulations: Data Act and AI Act
A. EU Data Act
What is the EU Data Act?
The EU Data Act is a regulation that establishes rules for fair access to and use of data generated by connected products and related services. It aims to unlock the value of industrial and IoT data while ensuring fairness in the data economy. The Act covers data sharing between businesses, data access for public sector bodies, switching between cloud providers, and interoperability requirements. It creates new rights and obligations for manufacturers, service providers, and data users.
When does the EU Data Act come into force?
The EU Data Act entered into force in January 2024 and has been applicable since 12 September 2025. From that date onwards, organisations are expected to comply with its requirements. This means companies should ensure that their products, contracts, and data practices align with the regulation, especially in areas such as data access, data sharing, and cloud switching.
Who does the EU Data Act apply to?
The EU Data Act applies to several categories of organizations: manufacturers of connected products (IoT devices, smart equipment, industrial machinery), providers of related digital services, data holders who receive data from connected products, data recipients who access shared data, cloud service providers and data processing services, and public sector bodies that may request data access. The geographic scope extends to any organization offering products or services in the EU market, regardless of where they are headquartered.
How does the EU Data Act affect IoT and manufacturing companies?
IoT and manufacturing companies face significant obligations under the EU Data Act. Manufacturers must design products to make data easily accessible to users. They must provide users with data generated by their products in a usable format. They cannot unreasonably restrict users from sharing data with third parties. They must implement appropriate technical measures for data access and security. For manufacturing companies, this means reconsidering how data flows from equipment and sensors, updating product designs, and revising customer contracts and data practices.
What are the EU Data Act requirements for cloud providers?
The EU Data Act introduces important requirements for cloud and data processing service providers. They must enable customers to switch to other providers or port data to on-premises systems. They must provide detailed information about data portability and switching processes. They must eliminate or phase out switching charges within a defined period. They must meet interoperability requirements for certain services. Cloud providers should review their service agreements, technical capabilities, and pricing models to ensure compliance.
What penalties apply for EU Data Act non-compliance?
The EU Data Act empowers member states to establish penalties that are effective, proportionate, and dissuasive. While specific penalty amounts are determined at the national level, the regulation provides a framework suggesting significant fines for serious infringements. Organizations should expect enforcement approaches similar to GDPR, with potential for substantial administrative fines. Beyond direct penalties, non-compliance may result in contract disputes, competitive disadvantage, and reputational damage.
How can adesso help with EU Data Act compliance?
adesso helps organizations prepare for the EU Data Act through a structured compliance approach. We provide impact assessment to identify which products and services are in scope. We conduct gap analysis comparing current practices against requirements. We design data sharing architectures and technical solutions. We review and update contracts with customers and partners. We implement data access mechanisms and portability solutions. Our combined legal understanding and technical implementation capability ensures comprehensive compliance.
B. EU AI Act
What is the EU AI Act?
The EU AI Act is the world's first comprehensive law regulating artificial intelligence. It classifies AI systems into different risk categories, from minimal to unacceptable risk, and sets obligations for providers and users based on these risks. The goal is to ensure that AI used in the EU is safe, transparent, and respects fundamental rights while still enabling innovation. The Act establishes requirements for AI system documentation, human oversight, transparency, accuracy, and cybersecurity.
When does the EU AI Act come into force?
The EU AI Act is being phased in over several years. It entered into force on 1 August 2024. The ban on unacceptable-risk AI systems and related AI literacy obligations have applied since 2 February 2025. Obligations for general-purpose AI models started to apply on 2 August 2025. Most rules for high-risk AI systems will apply from 2 August 2026, with some high-risk systems embedded in regulated products following in 2027.
Because some practices are already prohibited and GPAI rules are in force, organisations should by now have assessed any “unacceptable risk” use cases and mapped their AI systems against the Act. The remaining time before August 2026 needs to be used to prepare governance, documentation and technical controls for high-risk AI compliance.
What AI systems are prohibited under the EU AI Act?
The EU AI Act prohibits AI systems that pose unacceptable risks. These include: social scoring systems by public authorities, most uses of real-time remote biometric identification in public spaces (with limited exceptions), AI that manipulates human behaviour in a way that is likely to cause harm, AI that exploits the vulnerabilities of specific groups (such as children), and indiscriminate scraping of facial images to build recognition databases.
These prohibitions have applied since February 2025, so organisations should already have identified and discontinued any AI use cases that fall into these categories, and ensure that no new systems are developed or deployed using these banned practices.
What are high-risk AI systems under the EU AI Act?
High-risk AI systems are those that can significantly impact people's safety or fundamental rights. Examples include AI used in: critical infrastructure such as energy and transport, employment and HR including CV screening and recruitment tools, credit scoring and access to essential services, healthcare and medical devices, law enforcement and border control, and education assessment. For these systems, the Act requires strict risk management, data quality, transparency, human oversight, logging, and ongoing monitoring.
What are the penalties for EU AI Act non-compliance?
Non-compliance with the EU AI Act can lead to significant administrative fines. For prohibited AI practices, fines can reach up to 35 million euros or 7% of global annual turnover. For high-risk AI system violations, fines can reach up to 15 million euros or 3% of global turnover. For providing incorrect information to authorities, fines can reach up to 7.5 million euros or 1.5% of turnover. Beyond financial penalties, organizations may face bans on placing AI systems on the market, reputational damage, and contractual pressure from customers and partners.
Does the EU AI Act apply to companies outside Europe?
Yes, the EU AI Act has extraterritorial effect. It applies to any organization that places AI systems on the EU market or whose AI systems are used by people located in the EU, regardless of where the organization is headquartered. This means US, Asian, and other non-EU companies serving European customers must comply. The Act also covers providers who use output from AI systems in the EU. Companies worldwide serving EU markets need to assess their AI Act obligations.
How can organizations prepare for EU AI Act compliance?
Organizations should take a structured approach to EU AI Act preparation. First, create an AI inventory documenting all AI systems in development and production. Second, classify each system by risk level according to the Act's categories. Third, assess gaps between current practices and required controls for each risk level. Fourth, prioritize remediation starting with prohibited systems and high-risk applications. Fifth, implement required technical controls, documentation, and governance processes. Sixth, establish ongoing monitoring and compliance management. Starting this process now is essential given the phased implementation timeline.
How can adesso help with EU AI Act compliance?
adesso helps organizations move from uncertainty to a concrete, actionable compliance roadmap. Our services include: initial EU AI Act impact assessment to identify in-scope AI use cases, classification of systems by risk level and priority, design of AI governance roles and processes, support in documentation technical controls and monitoring, integration of compliance into your existing AI development lifecycle, and training for technical and business teams. We work with both business and technical stakeholders to ensure EU AI Act requirements become a natural part of how you design, build, and operate AI, not just a one-off legal exercise.
